When it comes to driving in the Dallas – Fort Worth area, 2023 began with an ominous start. On January 17, an 18-wheeler collided with a pickup truck in a double fatal crash.
One day later, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) issued its report on the catastrophic accident of February 11, 2021. That incident involved 133 cars (including commercial and passenger vehicles) and caused dozens of injuries and six fatalities.
Horrific accidents seem to be a regular feature of Dallas – Fort Worth highways. Here are the area’s most dangerous stretches.
Interstate 35
Interstate 35 is one of America’s most deadly roadways because it travels through Dallas – Fort Worth’s congested metro areas and is the “‘de facto route’ for thousands of 18-wheelers.”
A “major national trade corridor,” according to the Texas Department of Transportation, I-35W near Fort Worth sees around 165,000 vehicles per day, 11% of which are trucks. When bad weather descends on the highway’s frequent construction zones, the combination is especially deadly.
Interstate 20
Interstate 20 is another one of the country’s most deadly roadways. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) calls it one of the most dangerous interstates for truckers.
According to the Texas Department of Transportation, commercial motor vehicles were involved in 23% of all I-20 corridor crashes between 2015 and 2021. Most of these were in the Dallas metro area.
Route 175
Commercial truckers warn each other about Route 175. The span of the route is 111 miles long, with 0.7 deaths per mile, but “almost half of those [deaths] occur every year in the Dallas section of the roadway.” The section of Route 175 where drivers merge into Interstate 45 is regularly the site of accidents.
