Bicycling in Fort Worth comes with benefits and drawbacks. On one hand, a city this large has the resources to invest in its bicycling infrastructure, making riding more accessible for people looking for an alternate means of transportation.
This infrastructure can also make bicycling safer than it might be in a smaller community with less infrastructure. However, larger cities mean there are more cars and trucks that bicyclists must share the road with.
This dynamic means that, despite the presence of safety infrastructure like bike lanes and trails, bicyclists in Fort Worth still face the risk of injury or death in a crash, and must always ride with their safety in mind.
How Dangerous Is Bicycling in Fort Worth?
In 2021, there were 152 bicycling accidents in the Fort Worth area. Four of these crashes were classified as fatality wrecks, and another 32 resulted in serious injury to the bicyclist. Intersections were especially dangerous for cyclists: 88 bike accidents happened at a Fort Worth intersection. One fatality and 32 serious injuries were reported at intersections.
Intersections in Fort Worth Every Bicyclist Should Be Wary Of
Between 2018 and 2022, bicycle accidents occurred in nearly every part of Fort Worth. However, there are several intersections where numerous pedestrian and bicycling accidents have happened.
Riders who travel near or through these intersections should be especially careful to avoid being injured in a preventable collision:
- East Belknap Street at North Beach Street
- NW 28th Street near Cliff Street
- E Lancaster Drive near S Riverside
- Belknap Street near N Riverside
- Basswood Boulevard around North Beach Street
These and similar intersections were the site of multiple pedestrian and bicycling accidents over the 2018 to 2022 reporting period. Most of the streets mentioned are major surface streets that carry a large volume of traffic from one end of the city to another.
Factors Involved in Fort Worth Intersection Accidents
While details about the bicycle crashes that occurred in Fort Worth between 2018 and 2022 are unavailable, the following risk factors were identified in some intersection bicycle accidents:
Urban Areas
An urban area like Fort Worth features many intersections compared with more rural areas outside city limits. In an urban area, a driver’s visibility can be limited by tall buildings, other cars and trucks, and other similar obstructions, which can make it difficult to see a bicyclist, especially one who is not using a marked bike lane.
Nighttime
Eight serious injury bike wrecks happened at night in 2021. The challenges of seeing bicyclists in an urban area like Fort Worth are only amplified at night. Even though many intersections have streetlights, cyclists who are not wearing reflective clothing or who do not have lights on their bikes can still be challenging to see.
Moreover, motorists may not even expect to encounter bicyclists at night. As a result, they may fail to check crosswalks or their blind spots as diligently as they should, increasing the chance of a collision.
Age
Seven of the bicyclists injured in crashes in 2021 were between the ages of 21 and 39. Conversely, only three of the bicyclists hurt that same year were over 50. Younger riders may be more prone to taking risks, including traveling faster on streets and through intersections. The faster a cyclist is traveling, the less time other motorists have to see them and react to them.
Are There Any Safe Intersections in Fort Worth?
The five intersections identified above are just some of the many intersections that pose dangers to bicyclists. Because the conditions that make these intersections dangerous can exist at any Fort Worth intersection, bicyclists should cautiously approach and navigate any intersection they come across.
